The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), organized on a rotational basis by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), processes all candidate registrations via the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS).

Unlike many portals that merely inspect file size (KB), GOAPS executes mathematical aspect-ratio validation scripts directly in the browser and server prior to saving your upload. If your image’s pixel width divided by its pixel height does not fall squarely within the specified mathematical limits, GOAPS will refuse the file with an “Invalid Aspect Ratio” error.

1. The GOAPS Mathematical Ratio Rules Decoded

Here is the exact formula GOAPS uses to evaluate candidate files:

Candidate Photo Ratio: 0.66 ≤ (Width / Height) ≤ 0.86
Candidate Signature Ratio: 3.15 ≤ (Width / Height) ≤ 4.04

Let’s examine how this functions in practice:

  • Standard Photograph: If you crop your image to 480 pixels wide by 640 pixels tall, the ratio is 480 / 640 = 0.75. Because 0.75 is comfortably between 0.66 and 0.86, it passes immediately. However, if you upload a square 500×500 pixel image, the ratio is 1.0, which causes an immediate rejection.
  • Candidate Signature: If you crop your signature box to 560 pixels wide by 160 pixels tall, the ratio is 560 / 160 = 3.50. Because 3.50 is between 3.15 and 4.04, it passes seamlessly. A square crop (1.0) or an overly wide crop (> 4.04) will be rejected.

2. GATE Photograph Framing & Lighting Guidelines

  • Face Coverage: 60% to 70% of the image must consist of the candidate’s face, showing forehead, eyes, nose, cheeks, and chin.
  • Background: Pure white or very light background. No colored walls or textured wallpaper.
  • Lighting: Diffused frontal lighting. No harsh side shadows on cheeks or behind the ears.
  • Facial Hair / Appearance: Must match your appearance on the day of the exam. If you wear glasses, the lenses must be clear with no glare or flash reflection.

3. GATE Signature Requirements

IIT organizing committees emphasize clear handwriting for biometric signature verification at the examination center:

  • Sign within a clean rectangular box on unruled white paper.
  • Use a dark black or dark blue ballpoint / gel pen with good ink flow. Faint pencil marks or ballpens with skipping ink will be flagged during scrutiny.
  • Write in natural cursive handwriting. Full capital block letters will be rejected.
  • Aspect ratio must be between 3.15 and 4.04, with file size between 5 KB and 200 KB.

4. How to Prepare Your GATE Documents with ToolKB

  1. Capture a clear portrait against a white wall and sign inside a rectangular boundary.
  2. Open ToolKB’s GATE Photo Resizer.
  3. Select “Photograph” (automatically applies 480×640 px / 0.75 ratio) or “Signature” (automatically applies 560×160 px / 3.50 ratio).
  4. The local in-browser compressor outputs a crisp JPG under 200 KB that complies with both pixel dimensions and GOAPS mathematical ratios.

Top 3 Rejection Causes in GATE Scrutiny

Defect 1: “Signature aspect ratio is out of range” — Occurs when candidates scan their signature with too much empty vertical margin. Ensure width is approximately 3.5 times the height.
Defect 2: “Photo resolution lower than 240×320 pixels” — Common when taking screenshots from messaging apps like WhatsApp. Use the original camera shot.
Defect 3: “Face obstructed or dark background” — Outdoor casual photos with trees or colored rooms will trigger a correction notification in GOAPS scrutiny.
