What is WebP?

WebP is an image format developed by Google for the web. It produces smaller file sizes than JPG at similar visual quality, which makes it common on websites and in web apps. The trade-off is that some older software, upload portals and workflows don't support WebP files.

What is JPG?

JPG (or JPEG) is the most widely supported image format for photographs. It uses lossy compression to produce compact files, which makes it practical for sharing, uploading and editing. Virtually every device, browser and application accepts JPG files. It does not support transparency — transparent areas in the source image will be filled with a solid color on conversion.

Why convert WebP to JPG?

The most common reason is compatibility. A website, application or workflow may only accept JPG files. Other situations where a JPEG version is useful:

• A form or portal requires a JPG upload — for example, a job application, admission form or travel document upload.
• Editing software doesn't recognise WebP files.
• A colleague, client or service expects a standard photo format.
• The file will be embedded in a document that expects JPG.

Does converting WebP to JPG affect quality?

Conversion changes how the image data is encoded. If the source WebP used lossy compression, some information was already discarded when the WebP was created — encoding the result as a JPEG cannot recover it. For most photographs at a quality setting of 85–90%, the visual difference is small. Lowering the quality setting will reduce file size further but introduces more visible compression.

Does JPG support transparency?

No. JPG does not have an alpha channel. If the source WebP contains transparent areas, ToolKB fills them with a background color (white by default). You can choose a different background color in the converter before downloading.
