What Is a HEIC File and Why Do People Convert It?

HEIC is the default photo format on iPhone and iPad. It stores photos efficiently, but many websites and applications only accept JPG — which is why conversion is often needed.

What is a HEIC file?

HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. Apple introduced it as the default camera format with iOS 11 in 2017. The format is based on the HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) compression standard and is designed to store photos at roughly half the file size of a JPG, while preserving the same visual quality.

In practical terms: a 4MB JPEG from your iPhone might be stored as a 2MB HEIC — same picture, smaller file. For people with tens of thousands of photos on their phones, this saves meaningful storage space.

Why does Apple use HEIC?

Three reasons:

Storage efficiency. Half the file size compared to JPG at equivalent quality, which extends how many photos you can store on the same device.
Better quality per byte. HEIC preserves more colour information, supports 16-bit colour depth, and handles HDR (High Dynamic Range) better than JPEG's 8-bit limit.
Live Photos. The HEIC container can store multiple images in one file — which is how Live Photos and burst sequences work on iPhone.

Why can't I upload a HEIC file?

Most websites, government portals, job application forms, and older applications were built expecting JPEG or PNG. HEIC is not a universally supported standard outside the Apple ecosystem. Windows, Android, and most web servers do not open HEIC natively.

When you try to upload an iPhone photo to a form and get a “format not supported” error, it is almost always because the file is HEIC rather than JPG.

Does every iPhone photo become a HEIC?

Only if the High Efficiency camera setting is active — which it is by default on iPhones running iOS 11 or later. You can change this:

Go to Settings → Camera → Formats
Select Most Compatible to capture photos as JPG instead

Switching to Most Compatible will use more storage space per photo but avoids conversion issues entirely. Photos taken by apps (like WhatsApp or Instagram) are usually saved as JPG regardless of this setting.
